The Dachshund is a very playful breed that loves having fun and enjoys interacting with his/her owner, such as in retrieving thrown balls and going on family outings. Because of their loving nature and small size they make wonderful urban or apartment pets.
The doxies are an energetic (some are more relaxed) and unique little puppy that have an individuality all their own and adapt to most any climate.

Dachshunds were bred to have an elongated body, in order to pursue their prey and badgers, they carry the nicknames of "wiener dog", "Badger dog" or "Hot dog" and always generate a smile where ever they go. Long haired Doxies are believed to be the most social of the three varieties (long haired, smooth coat & wire-haired). They usually accept new people and other animals well. Socializing smooth coat and wire-haired Doxies at a young age is recommended to train them properly for new situations that involve children, strangers, larger dogs and cats. Daily walks are a much loved exercise by these little companions. When they are being led on a leash using a harness is preferred over using a collar. The harness will put tension over the strong chest area vs. putting tension around the neck.

Because of their long backs children should be cautioned not to play rough to avoid injury in the little Doxie. If treated properly Dachshunds can be a very loyal and tolerant companion to children.

The dachshund is considered to be fearless and unaware of its small size. They make a great watch dog due to their loud bark. Puppy obedience and socialization classes are strongly recommended and are a wonderful way to socialize your new little Dachshund.

Health…
The average life span of a Dachshunds is 12-15 years, depending on genetics and lifestyle.
Urinary tract problems, bloat and/or Diabetes are a few of the conditions that can occur in this breed.
Because of their long body and shortened rib cage they are more prone to spinal disc problems. One being an inter-vertebral disc disease called IVDD, which becomes more pronounced with obesity and can be treated with anti-inflammatory medications and non invasive surgical procedures.
Owners can minimize problems greatly with exercise, discouraging the Doxie form jumping from excessive heights and appropriate dog food.
Because of their unique body shape caution should be taken when climbing up and down the stairway.
Doxins are an average shedder, the longer haired can require some brushing.

Black (body color) and tan (point color)
Red (body color) and cream (point color)
Tan (body color) and gray (point color)
